Comme tu es – Margaret O’Hair & Sofia Cardoso

This first French picture book for la rentrée scolaire is inspired by Sofia Sanchez who has Down Syndrome.

This story is about being different and how diversity is beautiful. This French picture book is about accepting and embracing differences.

Moi aussi, je peux – Karen Autio & Laura Watson

The next French picture book for la rentrée scolaire is a short and heartwarming story of Leanne who can do all of the things her peers can do, only in her wheelchair.

The sentence structures are very simple and repetitive.

This French picture book is perfect for la rentrée scolaire, because it’s important for kids to see that one action can be done in many different ways, depending on our abilities.

Bienvenue – un livre sur l’inclusion – Alexandra Penfold & Suzanne Kaufman

Bienvenue – un livre sur l’inclusion is about everyone being welcome and safe at school. The book affirms that no matter your background, everyone has a place at school.

The sentence “tout le monde est bienvenue” repeats very frequently.

At the very end, you see all different types of families coming in to the school for Open House. Beautiful!

I could not find a more perfect French picture book for la rentrée scolaire!

Comment être gentil – Rana DiOrio & Stéphane Jorisch

Comment être gentil begins with the question “Être gentil, c’est quoi?”. The author talks about what being nice looks like in the classroom and at school.

One of my favourite lines in the book is “Être gentil, c’est avoir le courage de traiter les autres comme tu souhaites être traité”.

Tu y arriveras – Angela DiTerlizzi & Lorena Avarez

La rentrée scolaire can be exciting for some of our students and terrifying for others. Despite our best efforts, school and learning can be very challenging for some of our learners.

Tu y arriveras is an encouraging book about not giving back. In the story we are taught the word “perseverance” and what it means.

Whether you teach Core French or French Immersion, French picture books are an indispensable teaching tool. Today I am sharing my favourite French picture books with Black characters. Notably, whether you are looking for French picture books with Black characters for Black History Month or for any other month, I’ve got a wide variety of options for you in this post.

Moreover, in 2020, many French teachers committed to diversifying their bookshelves. Consequently, teachers unpacked the role that diverse picture books play in providing mirrors and windows, and eventually becoming sliding glass doors, for all of our students. This blog post is the second in a series where I share my favourite French picture books with characters with diverse identities. The first blog post featured French picture books with Muslim and/or Arab characters.

Why should you have French picture books with Black characters in your classroom library?

Half of English picture books published in 2015 featured non-human characters. However, the number of English picture books written by Black authors has increased since 2015. Noticeably, there was a noticeable increase following the Black Lives Matter movement’s remergence in 2020. Nevertheless, there are no similar studies on French picture books with Black characters. What we do know is that many of the French picture books in the market are French translations of American books.

Why do we need to have French picture books with Black characters in our classroom libraries?

Black children need to see themselves represented. When students spend six hours a day in classrooms learning, representation within the context of education is essential. Furthermore, non-Black students must also see read about Black characters in picture books.

Anti-Black racism did not end in 2020, folks. It is alive and well.

Moreover, our non-Black students need to learn about the history and presence of anti-Black racism. They need to play an active role in unlearning stereotypes and biases. Non-Black students also need to read stories where Black characters experience joy and successful.

Who writes the stories? #ownvoice

I am a South Asian woman who was born and raised in Canada. I never got to read stories about my culture written by people who looked like me until I was in my twenties.

This has got to change!

On my platforms, I choose to share books written by #ownvoices. If you are interested in learning more about own voices, please do read this important blog post by Little Feminist explaining what it is and why it’s important.

Wherever possible, I have tried to share French books written by Black people. There are a few unique cases where I have decided to include a book written by a non-Black author.

Where should you purchase these French picture books with Black characters from?

Invaincus par Kwame Alexander, illustrations de Kadir Nelson

Invaincus is a powerful hommage to all Black trailblazers who fought for freedom and justice.

This book is about a long history of resistance and resilience.

There are so many things I love about this book – the powerful illustrations and the poetic way in which Kwame Alexander writes.

Kwame Alexander writes in a way where he allows the pictures to speak for themselves. It is a powerful way of storytelling as it allows you the teacher to lead an age-appropriate discussion. I

Final opinion: this book should be in every classroom library in Canada and the US. We cannot move forward without knowing where we come from and where we are today.

French level: mid-novice. Lots of present tense, some past tense, and tons of French adjectives.

Nos boucles au naturel – Matthew A. Cherry, les illustrations de Vashti Harrison

In Nos boucles au naturel, we meet Zuri who is so proud of her beautiful hair.

Zuri wakes on a special morning and enlists her dad’s help to do her hair. Her dad attempts to help her with her hair. However, his initial efforts failed despite his best efforts.

This book belongs in every classroom and school. At a time when Black hair is still so stigmatized, Black children deserve to see themselves represented in a story that celebrates a unique aspect of their appearance and their identity – their hair.

This book is equally important for non-Black people to read for so many reasons!

French level: intermediate. There’s quite a bit of passé composé and imparfait.

Le carnaval de Malaika par Nadia L. Hohn et les illustrations d’Irene Luxbacher

Le Carnaval de Malaika is a picture book that will give you all the feels.⁣
⁣
This is a story of a little girl who lives in the French Caribbean. Her mom marries a Québecois man and Malaika and her family must move to Canada.⁣
⁣
Malaika is incredibly heartbroken about having to leave her beautiful home, her community, and especially her loving grandmother.⁣
⁣
When Malaika reaches Quebec, she has a difficult time adjusting to her new home and she misses her grandmother dearly!⁣

I Have a Dream – 52 icônes noires qui ont marqué l’histoire – Jamia Wilson et Andrea Pippins

This is an excellent French book for kids, especially for French Black History Month lessons and activities (le mois de l’histoire des noirs). It contains beautiful illustrations and empowering descriptions of the lives and contributions of 52 Black icons all around the world.

So many of these types of books focus solely on the contributions of Black Americans. Canadians are typically more exposed to American stories, so it’s fantastic that this book has an international focus. It reinforces that Black history pertains to ALL of us everywhere in the world.

Examples of a few Black icons included in the book: Malorie Blackman (UK), Josephine Baker (US/France), Kofi Annan (Ghana), Nelson Mandela (South Africa)

A few ways to use I have a dream with your students:

• assign a different icon to each student in your class. Students can research and present their icon to the class
• as a class, study a different icon every day

Themes: pionniers noirs / pionnières noires, le mois de l’histoire des Noirs

French level: advanced French. We learn about the history of each character as well as how their story connects to the historical context of the time.

La détermination de Viola Desmond par Jody Nyasha Warner et Richard Rudnicki

If you are Canadian, you are likely familiar with Viola Desmond’s story.

This book is re-tells the story of Viola Desmond.

Viola Desmond was a Black Canadian trailblazer. She resisted racial segregation in Nova Scotia in the 1940s. Desmond was arrested in the 1940s for refusing to leave a whites-only area of a movie theatre.

Desmond’s courage paved the way for the end of segregation in the province.

Many Canadians falsely believe that there isn’t a history of segregation and anti-Black racism in Canada. It is only recently that Canadians have become familiar with Viola’s story.

Viola Desmond’s story is a vital part of Canadian history.

La détermination de Viola Desmond recounts the story of what happened that night when Viola resisted.

Themes: ségregation, injustices, droits civils au Canada, pionnionère noire

French level: high intermediate-advanced French (mix of tenses, some simple structures, some complex structures)

La princesse de l’eau claire – Susan Verde, illustrations de Peter H. Reynolds

La princess de l’eau claire is based off of the true story of Georgie Badiel. Georgie Badiel is an African model from Burkina Faso who spent much of her childhood walking many kilometers daily to access freshwater.

This story was inspired by Georgie’s determination to find a solution so that families did not have to walk long distances to access water. Georgie also wanted to find a solution that would ensure that the freshwater was clean to drink.

La princess de l’eau claire is an inspiring story of a little girl who dreams to one day put an end to this water crisis that affects the residents of Burkina Faso.

Joséphine – Joséphine Baker, la danse, la Résistance et les enfants par Patricia Hruby Powell, illustrations de Christian Robinson

Joséphine is a 99-page book about the life of Joséphine Baker.

Baker was a renowned Black American entertainer who defied racial barriers in 20th-century France & the United States. Celebrated for her captivating performances and iconic banana skirt dance, Baker used her fame to aid the French Resistance during WWII.

She also fought against segregation in the United States. Baker became the first Black woman to be inducted in the Panthéon in 2021.

The book is divided into different periods in Baker’s life. We begin with her childhood and end with her death.

If you teach French Immersion (Grades 6+) or older Core French (Grades 10+), I recommend reading a section of her life at a time and then spending time learning about the historical events discussed in that section. You will also need to break down new vocabulary for your students.

**** The French version of the N-word (the word from which the English N-word is derived) has been used multiple times. On p.31, it is used within the context of the violence the KKK was committing towards Black people. On pages 54, 56, and 58 the word appears once more. This time it is the name of a French magazine. On p.71, the word describes a genre that Josphine sang in Austria. On p.78, Josephine is called the feminine version of that word by American media. It appears twice on this page.

My final opinion: This is the first book I’ve read about Josephine’s life and accomplishments and I enjoyed the read.

I loved learning about the history of the 20th century through the lens of Joséphine’s life. It was also interesting to see the difference in treatment that Josephine received in France vs. in the United States.

French level: advanced. It has some extremely challenging vocabulary and sentence structures.

Le voyage de Cora par Natacha Hounsou, illustrations d’Anastasiya Rudyk

Finally, we’ve got Le voyage de Cora which is a book written by an Ontario French teacher! French teachers – go support your fellow French teacher!

This is a light read about Cora going on vacation to the sea for the very first time. In order to enjoy every part of her vacation, Cora must overcome her fear of the sea.

Themes: famille, vacances, mer, aventures, gentillesse

French level: high intermediate (a mix of tenses and tons of new thematic vocabulary)

What is Salma et les saveurs de la Syrie about?

Salma et les saveurs de la Syrie is written by Danny Ramadan. It is the story of Salma who has recently moved to Vancouver from Syria. In the story, it is implied that Salma and her mother are refugees.

Salma and her mom live in a shelter for refugees in Vancouver awaiting the arrival of Salma’s baba.

Salma notices that her mother no longer laughs. She decides that she is going to make one of her favourite Syrian dishes Foul shami in order to make her mom smile.

Salma embarks on a grand adventure to make her favourite Syrian dish. However, it’s not easy. She stumbles upon many obstacles that almost prevent her from making her dish.

The generosity and kindness of every individual at the shelter eventually help her finish her dish just in time for dinner.

Who is Salma et les saveurs de la Syrie for?

There is no outright mention of war and violence. In my opinion, this is a great book for grades 4+.

The level of French is high intermediate. It is all in the present tense, however, there is very little repetition of vocabulary so that may be tough for novice learners.

I read this Salma et les saveurs de la Syrie to my Grade 10 students. This is a very squirrely group that struggles to sit for five minutes.

The entire time I read to them, not a single student moved or spoke. They were so engaged!

Who is this French picture book NOT for?

French teachers – please ensure that you know the background of each and every student in your class before you read it. I do not recommend reading this to students who escaped war recently. It may be really very triggering.

Why should we read Salma et les saveurs de la Syrie in our classrooms and schools?

Canada is home to not only Syrian refugees but refugees from all over the world. Canadian children need to know and understand how and why refugees arrive in Canada, the trauma and violence they experience, and how difficult the transition in their new home country can be.

Ultimately, we want our students to be empathetic towards all of their peers as children and then as adults.

Extension activities to do with this French picture book

Summarize the story using passé composé and imparfait

I personally had my Grade 10 students summarize the story in the past tense.

• Pourquoi Salma et sa mère ont-elles déménagé à Vancouver ?
• Qu’a remarqué Salma à propos de sa mère au début du roman? Quelle était la solution de Salma à ce problème ?
• Comment les sentiments de Salma à l’égard de Vancouver ont-ils évolué au cours de l’album ?

Research and map out the journey of a refugee

Students can research and learn about the journey that refugees must make when they decide that their home country is too unsafe. This includes the physical journey, but also understanding the laws and legalities of the different countries they must pass through.

Learn about the Syrian civil war

Another important extension activity is learning about the Syrian war, especially if you teach high school students. It doesn’t have to be a unit, even just reading an article can be impactful.

Nul poisson où aller is a short film released in 2014. Warning – it is not suitable for all ages!

Today I am sharing with you French picture books with Muslim and/or Arab characters. This blog post is the first in a series where I share some of my favourite French picture books with diverse characters.

Dear French publishers – this isn’t good enough

This blog post is very short and I am incredibly saddened by it. I have searched for French picture books with Muslim and/or Arab characters for a very long time. I am talking about years.

There are dozens and dozens of incredible books that are coming out in English with Muslim and/or Arab characters. These books, written by Muslim authors, are not just about trauma and war. As a matter of fact, they often have to do with celebratory messages and stories that Muslims and non-Muslims alike need to be exposed to.

The stories that tend to be translated into French are almost always about war and trauma. These stories are also incredibly important. However, only publishing picture books about war and trauma paints the false (and dangerous) narrative that the Muslim and Arab world only have one story – that of tragedy.

Since the death of George Floyd in 2020, there has been a lot of effort to ensure that there are diverse French picture books being published. There has been a ton of progress. However, we fall VERY short when it comes to French picture books with Muslim characters and Muslim representation.

Disclosure #2 – the Muslim world is very diverse

Before we proceed with this blog post, please understand that the Muslim world is incredibly diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, language, culture, and more. There is no single French picture book that could represent that diversity.

I am a South Asian woman who is friends with, and have always been friends with, Muslims from all over the world. I am very well aware of the diversity.

My dream is that this blog post will soon have French picture books with representation of a very diverse Muslim world.

Also, please note that I am fully aware that not all Muslims are Arab and not all Arabs are Muslim. I fully understand that there is so much diversity within the Muslim and/or Arab world.

I will continue to update this blog post with new French picture books with Muslim characters as they become available.

We need to explicitly counter dangerous stereotypes of Muslims and Arab people

Look, the Western world has carefully constructed the very dangerous narrative that Muslims are terrorists, especially Muslim men. The classroom is a radical environment in which we must deconstruct these narratives and humanize the Muslim world.

In the 21st Century, the West has also normalized the pain and suffering that Muslims have been forced to experience. If we are sharing stories of war and tragedy in our classroom, we must balance the narrative by also sharing stories of joy.

Muslim children deserve to live and experience joy and happiness. End of story.

Zaha Hadid par María Isabel Sánchez Vegara, illustré par Asun Amar

Zaha Hadid is the true story of a little girl from Iraq who knew she wanted to be an architect at the age of 11.

When Zaha was a little girl, she loved both art and math. She loved exploring with unique shapes and forms to create unique art.

Zaha’s story is an inspiring story of a woman who broke through the glass ceiling. In 2004, Hadid not only became the first woman to be awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, but she was also the first Muslim woman to win such a prize.

Themes: art, math, careers, women’s history

Year published: 2019

French level: Intermediate. mostly in passé composé/imparfait

Le plus beau des Aïds par Zeba Talkhani et Abeeha Tariq

Eid, or aïd en français, is the celebration that occurs post-Ramadan. In this book, we meet little Safa who is beyond excited about Eid!

In this book, we learn all about the traditions and customs that Safa and her family partake in on Eid.

Traditions include wearing new clothes, decorating one’s hands with henna, getting together with family, praying, and so much more!

Safa learns at the end of the book that a really important part of Eid is the act of giving selflessly. Thus, Safa and her mom take sweets and gifts to all of their (very diverse!!) neighbours.

In my opinion, every single classroom in Canada needs to have this book. Children need to be exposed to celebrations other than Christmas since our classrooms are very diverse places.

French level: high novice. Present tense.

Le Bibliobus by Bahram Rahman, illustrations by Gabrielle Grimard

In Bibliobus, we meet Pari and her mom who are Afghan. Pari and her mom live in a rural Afghan village nestled in the mountains. They live a short drive away from a UNHCR refugee camp.

Pari’s mom drives the Bibliobus to the refugee camp every day to ensure that the girls who live at the camp have access to free books.

Pari’s mom teaches her daughter about the importance of being educated and how their liberty (from war and violence) is intricately connected to their education.

Themes: education and the importance of access to education, girls and women’s rights

Year published: 2020

French level: high novice to intermediate French

While the story is evidently set during the United States’ war on Afghanistan post-9/11, there is no outright mention of violence and war. The author subtly alludes to the consequences of this war, such as the illustrations of the UNHCR refugee camp. As such, this story is suitable for elementary years.

Most importantly, this story is about courage, perseverance, and the heroism of Afghan teachers.

Dounia by Marya Zarif

Le Monde de Dounia takes place in Aleppo, Syria. Dounia is our main character. In the beginning of the story, we see what Aleppo was like before the Syrian war.

We see and learn about the beautiful streets and historical landmarks.

Then, the first bombs begin to fall on Aleppo and we see the world beginning to crumble around Dounia and her family.

Dounia, her grandmother, and her grandfather embark on a dangerous journey seeking shelter and safety. Upon their arrival in Greece, they are treated poorly by the soldiers.

Eventually, Dounia and her grandparents arrive in a wintery Canada and are finally safe.

Themes: Syrian war, the challenges refugees face on their journey

Year of publication: 2021

French level: high novice (all in present tense)

Salma et les saveurs de la Syrie by Danny Ramadan, illustrations by Anna Bron

This story is set in Vancouver, Canada. Salma and her mom live in a shelter for refugees in Vancouver awaiting the arrival of Salma’s baba.

Level of French: high intermediate. It’s almost entirely in present tense, however, there is very little repetition of vocabulary which might make it challenging.

Just like Bibliobus, Salma et les saveurs de la Syrie alludes to war, but there are no explicit statements. Salma et les saveurs de la Syrie is about the culture shock, PTSD, and transition children who are refugees have to experience.

Salma’s story is beautifully written as it gives the reader an inside perspective on some of the feelings and experiences that children who are Syrian refugees may be experiencing.

I will be honest – I cried my eyes out in the last quarter of the book and at the simple, but heartwarming ending.

In my opinion Salma et les saveurs de la Syrie is a must-read.

Bonus : Le courage d’Amal

Here’s a novel recommendation for French Immersion teachers looking for a diverse French read-aloud option.

Le courage d’Amal is about 12-year-old Amal. Amal lives in a rural village in Pakistan. She is the eldest in her family and adores her sisters.

You’ll probably have stereotypes of Pakistan in your head because of the mainstream media. However, it’s worth noting that the family is middle class, like most of her village. Life for this family and community is simple, but they’re all happy.

Amal loves to read, learn, and go to school. In fact, it’s everything she dreams of doing. Amal dreams of being a teacher so that she can pass on her love and passion for education to others.

However, an event at the village market changes the course of Amal’s life. Because of this event, Amal discovers that a small group has the most power in the community. This group’s power comes from wealth.

Subsequently, Amal leaves her family to become a maid for the richest and most powerful family in the village.

What follows is a chain of unjust events. Amal discovers that she must find the courage to face up to the injustices of powerful and dangerous characters.

Today I am excited to share with you a number of amazing diverse picture books for French class. Having diverse picture books in the classroom extremely important in the 21st Century classroom.

It is no longer optional. Your classroom library must include diverse French picture books, especially if you teach Elementary French.

As a French teacher, you need to ensure that the diversity is well-represented in your classroom library. Our students need to see themselves represented in literature. This is also an important opportunity for white students to learn about their peers’ experiences as racialized and/or religious minorities.

Parfois je suis un renard

Parfois je suis un renard is a chilren’s book written by Métis author Danielle Daniel. Daniel wrote and dedicated this beautiful picture book to Indigenous children who never got to learn their totem animal.

L’exploit de Nika

L’exploit de Nika, by Algonquin author Michel Noël, is one of my favourites from my classroom library.

Nika is a young goose who is about to make the journey south for the upcoming winter. ⁣

She decides part way through the journey that she is not going to make the journey after all and turns back. Nika wants to stay exactly where she is, despite all of the imminent signs of danger.⁣

However, luckily for her, her grandmother and her grandmother’s friends do not give up on her. As a matter of fact, they fly back to her and save her during a winter storm. ⁣

Consequently, L’exploit de Nika is a beautiful story about kindness, forgiveness and family. I especially recommend this one for all of you K-4 FRIMM teachers looking for a great book! ⁣

Le grain de sable — l’histoire d’Olivier le Jeune – le premier esclave au Canada.

This next one is a graphic novel debuting the story of Olivier, the first enslaved child in Canada.

To begin, Olivier is kidnapped as a small child from his loving mother from his home in Africa. Olivier is then put on a boat and witnesses and experiences what no child should ever have to experience. ⁣

The reader learns about Olivier’s feelings, anxieties and concerns at every stage of his life as a young enslaved child and then man. We also witness the injustices inflicted upon Olivier by his enslavers.

The story is beautifully written and the illustrations themselves are incredibly powerful.

Pineshish la pie bleue

• Auteur : Michel Noël
• Illustratrice : Camille Lavoie
• Origines :Autochtone
• Niveau de français : intermédiare – avancé

Pineshish la pie bleue is about a Magpie trying to make her way to safer lands to find the perfect spot to build a nest and raise her family.

Unfortunately, Pinéshish becomes caught in a violent wind storm before reaching her destination and consequently breaks her paw.

So, Pinéshish goes to a series of trees and asks for their hospital. All she needs is shelter from the storm. Sadly, almost all of the trees deny her shelter.

At the end of the story, one tree graciously takes her in and protects her from the storm. The theme of this beautiful story is compassion.

Ultimately, the moral of the story is that good things happen to good people who are compassionate and care for those around them.

Nos boucles au naturel

• Auteur : Matthew Cherry
• Niveau de français : débutant

Zuri wakes up one morning ready to tame her beautiful, natural hair. She discovers that her mother is not there that morning and so she attempts to do her own hair.

Her dad hears her getting ready and wants to help Zuri tame her beautiful hair.

This picture book is an empowering tale of a father who learns to do his daughter’s hair.

If you have Black students in your classroom, this picture book is an absolute representation-must.

Additionally, if teach non-Black students, this book is an important debut into discussions on eurocentric beauty standards and the discrimination and marginalization that Black people experience due to their natural hair.

It is our responsibility as teachers to ensure that these extremely relevant and important conversations are being had in our classrooms!

Le jour où on a mangé tous ensemble

As a young child, I was always embarrassed of my family’s religious and cultural dietary restrictions.

For example, we don’t eat pork or beef and we also do not meat on Sundays or Tuesdays. As a child, I yearned to be “normal”.

In Le jour où on a tous mangé ensemble, a teacher talks about the etymology of the word “pique-nique” and proposes the class go on a picnic together.

However, the classmates soon realize that the dietary restrictions of their fellow peers vary based on their culture and/religion.

Overall, the classmates learn about themes such as diversity, inclusivity and respecting one another’s beliefs and values through the action of sharing a meal together.

Le carnaval de Malaika

Le carnaval de Malaika is a picture book that will give you all the feels.

This is a story of a little girl who lives somewhere in the French Caribbean. Her mom marries a Québecois man and Malaika and her family must move to Canada.

Malaika is incredibly heartbroken about having to leave her beautiful home, her community, and especially her loving grandmother.

When Malaika reaches Quebec, she has a difficult time adjusting to her new home and she misses her grandmother dearly!

Today I am super excited to share with you one of my favourite books in French called Parfois je suis un renard. Parfois je suis un renard is a picture book written by an Indigenous author.

I often hear from my Instagram teacher community that there aren’t enough resources in French about anti-racism and representation.

That is definitely not true!

As a matter of fact, I have blog posts dedicated to French resources on Indigenous perspectives, BLM, and la francophonie.

While it can be very difficult to find good resources in French, they definitely do exist!

Parfois je suis un renard is a chilren’s book written by Métis author Danielle Daniel. Daniel wrote and dedicated this beautiful picture book to Indigenous children who never got to learn their totem animal.

These children may have lost touch with their culture as a result of a variety of traumas inflicted on Indigenous communities and peoples.

For example, their parents or grandparents were survivors of residential schools, the 60s Scoop or the foster care system which unjustly targeted and continues to target Indigenous families.

Each page of the book introduces a different totem animal. The reader learns about the totem characteristics of each animal and what makes them unique.

Who is Parfois je suis un renard ideal for?

This book is perfect for :

• primary French Immersion & up
• Beginner Core French & up

The book is written entirely in present tense ER verbs! As a result, it is simple to comprehend for French learners of all levels.

In addition, the repetition of a similar sentence structure ensures comprehension.

For instance, each page contains 1-2 ER verbs and a number of adjectives describing the totem animal.

Extension activities for Je suis un renard

So, you have purchased the book and you read it to/with your class. Now what?? I have two activity suggestions for you!

Elementary French Immersion or elementary Core French

Scholastic Canada has a fantastic extension activity for elementary students. It is a PDF printable that you can either project or print for the kiddos.

In this PDF, students circle adjectives that they identify with. In fact, I suggest you do this activity before reading the book. This also a great opportunity to learn the adjectives that will be discussed in the book.

Moreover, the PDF also shares age-appropriate information on the book and author.

FSL Secondary

This next activity is more of an in-depth analysis of the picture book. Students begin by looking up the key vocabulary outlined at the top of the page.

Next, the goal is for students to locate the ER verbs and adjectives located on each page.

They then copy down the ER verb and the adjective in the appropriate box. Finally, I have my students draw an image of that specific totem animal characterized by the verbs and adjectives.

For example, if the animal is wise, they have to draw me a picture showing how the animal is wise.

Today I am going to be sharing with you 5 French books on residential schools. It is incredibly important that our students understand the magnitude of the traumas inflicted on Indigenous peoples in residential schools.

All 5 of these books are in French and are picture books appropriate for Elementary-aged students and older. There is a number of activities that you can do with your students to demonstrate their understanding.

Additionally, if you teach Indigenous students, please ensure that you are speaking to counsellors and family members in advance. This is a crucial step to avoid re-inflicting trauma on those students.

Finally, if you are looking for more French resources with Indigenous perspectives, I have a whole blog post dedicated to movies, documentaries, texts, books and so much more.

1. Les bas du pensionnat

This is a 7 chapter story about Margaret a 7 year-old Inuit girl who lives near Aklavik.

Margaret desperately wants to attend the same residential school her father attended, but her father will not allow that. She dreams to read, write and attend this school her half-sister also attends.

After attempting to convince her father for months, her father reluctantly agrees to allow her to attend residential school. Margaret discovers all too soon that the school is nothing like home and that the sisters are nothing like her family.

2. Quand j’avais huit ans

This picture book and Les bas du pensionnats are written by the same authors. Quand j’avais huit ans is a condensed version of Les bas du pensionnat.

3. Shi-shi-etko

This story is about Shi-shi-etko, a little girl who is about to leave for residential school for the first time.

Days before leaving, Shi-shi-etko spends all her time outdoors and with her family. She savours the way the sand feels under her toes, the sound of bees buzzing around her and the tall grasses swaying from the wind. She savours all the sights, sounds, and feel of everything and everyone she finds comforting and familiar.

In the end, Shi-shi-etko promises to herself that no matter what happens at school, she will never forget all of the lessons her family taught her and the memories she holds in her heart.

4. La pirogue de Shin-chi

La pirogue de Shini-chi, written by the same authors as Shi-shi-etko, features the story of Shin-chi who is Shi-shi-etko’s little brother. Before leaving for school, the two siblings ask their father if he will make them a new canoe.

During their long journey to school, Shi-shi-etko comforts her little brother by reminding him about the best part of home and she tells him important. When they arrive at the school, she gives him the little oak canoe that.

5. L’histoire du chandail orange

This book is absolutely one that you should begin with, if your students are completely new to the history of Orange Shirt Day.

Phyllis Webstad went shopping with her grandmother before attending her residential school. Her grandmother purchased her a brand new orange shirt and she could not wait to wear it on her first day of school.

When Phyllis got to her school, the sisters took Phyllis’ shirt cruelly. The orange shirt has become a symbol of the trauma and pain inflicted on Indigenous children in residential schools.

Aujourd’hui, je vais partager avec vous une de mes lectures récentes intitulée Kuessipan de Naomi Fontaine.

C’était un de ces livres où on arrête de lire vers la fin parce qu’on ne veut pas que ça finisse !

Qui est Naomi Fontaine ?

Naomi Fontaine est écrivaine innue. Elle est née à Uashat, au Québec. En plus, elle est aussi enseignante de la langue française au secondaire dans sa propre communauté.

Ce qui est très intéressant, c’est que le talent de Fontaine a été découvert par son prof lors de son bac en éducation.

Fontaine a écrit et publié Kuessipan en 2011 à l’âge de 23 ans.

Quel est le but du livre ?

Pour commencer, Kuessipan est d’une collection de descriptions abstraites et émouvantes de lieux, de personnes et des évènements. Le roman est divisé en quatre parties intitulées Nomade, Uashat, Nutshimit et Nikuss.

L’écriture de Fontaine coule si merveilleusement et est de nature poétique. Fontaine raconte la vie dure mais plein d’espoir et de résilience au sein de son communauté innue.

Dans chaque partie du livre, elle raconte des événements qui ont fait de la vie une lutte pour elle-même et pour sa communauté. En même temps, la lectrice témoigne de la résilience et de la force de sa communauté.

Quels sont les thèmes du roman ?

Fontaine raconte des histoires au sujet de la pauvreté dans sa communauté, les tragédies, l’amour de sa grand-mère, les pensionnats et beaucoup d’autres sujets.

Pourquoi ce livre est-il particulièrement remarquable ?

J’ai fait mon baccalauréat en français au Canada. À l’université, nous avons suivi des cours où nous devions mémoriser le vocabulaire descriptif en mémorisant des listes de vocabulaire.

Quand je lisais Kuessipan, ce qui me frappait, c’était la façon dont Fontaine tissait des mots pour créer des images vives. Ses descriptions peignaient des images si vives dans mon esprit comme si je regardais le monde à travers ses yeux.

En fait, vers la fin, j’arrêterais de lire le livre parce que je ne voulais pas qu’il finisse !

Qui devrait le lire ?

Je me demande combien de programme d’immersion au secondaire lit au moins un livre écrit par un autochtone francophone. À mon avis, ce livre devrait faire parti de chaque programme de littérature au secondaire en immersion ou à l’université.

Les mots de Fontaine et la manière dont elle écrit sont tellement puissants.

Fontaine écrit, pour la plupart, au présent et au passé (composé et imparfait). Pour cette raison, les élèves en immersion pourront facilement comprendre les évènements.

En plus, vous pouvez aborder une quantité infinie de discussions, de questions et de réflexions sur les expériences, les histoires et les perspectives autochtones.

Pour conclure – procurez-vous Kuessipan de Naomi Fontaine immédiatement

En conclusion, je vous encourage, surtout si vous êtes blanc, à tenir des discussions réfléchies avec les membres de votre département.

Demandez-vous combien de livres que vos élèves lisent, sont écrits par des francophones autochtones. Les francophones autochtones existent depuis le début de la colonisation. Ils DOIVENT être représentés dans nos classes de FSL et de FRIMM.

Cette année, je me suis engagée à lire au moins un dizaine de livres écrits par des francophones de couleur.

Le courage d’Amal n’est pas écrit par un francophone. Néanmoins, c’est toujours un beau roman inspirant

Quand je faisais mon bac en français, nous avons été introduits à que des livres écrits par des blancs.

Il y a donc une énorme quantité de livres que les enseignants peuvent trouver en anglais écrits par divers auteurs. Je trouve que ces livres sont plus difficiles à trouver en français.

En tant qu’enseignant-e, mon je veux partager des coup de coeurs que vous pouvez facilement incorporer dans votre enseignement.

Pourquoi la diversité est-elle importante dans les livres d’images et les romans dans nos cours de français?

Veuillez noter que ce livre a été acheté et lu avant les événements de mai/juin 2020.

J’ai commandé plus d’une douzaine de livres écrits par des auteurs noirs et j’attends toujours (im)patiemment leur arrivée. Je vais écrire plusieurs articles de blog sur tous les livres que j’ai achetés.

Jusque-là, voici une liste des ressources françaises en lien avec La vie des noirs compte.

Le courage d’Amal

Le courage d’Amal est une très belle lecture pour tous les enfants en immersion et au secondaire. Je vous encourage fortement de le lire en particulier à haute voix devant vos élèves.

Le personnage principal de ce livre est une fille de douze ans appelé Amal. 

Amal vit dans un village rural au Pakistan. Elle est l’aînée de sa famille et elle adore ses soeurs.

Vous aurez probablement des stéréotypes de Pakistan en tête a cause des medias traditionnels.

Cependant, il faut noter que la famille fait partie de la classe moyenne, comme la plupart de son village.

La vie, pour cette famille et ce communauté, est simple mais ils sont tous heureux. 

Amal adore lire, apprendre et aller a l’école. En fait, c’est tous qu’elle rêve faire. En effet, Amal rêve d’être enseignante pour qu’elle puisse transmettre son amour et sa passion pour l’education aux autres.

Cependant, un événement au marche du village change le parcours de la vie d’Amal. À cause de cet événement, Amal découvre qu’un petit groupe a le plus de pouvoir sur la communauté . Le pouvoir de ce groupe vient de la richesse. 

Par la suite, Amal quitte sa famille pour devenir la domestique de la famille la plus riche et puissante au village.

Ce qui suit, c’est une chaine d’évènements injustes. Amal découvre qu’elle doit trouver du courage pour faire face aux injustices des personnages puissantes et dangereuses. 

Thèmes du roman

En lisant cette histoire inspiratrice, vos élèves découvriront la culture pakistanaise mais aussi la manière dont laquelle la vie, les coutumes, les valeurs diffèrent. 

Le manque de pouvoir et d’agence est un autre thème récurrent dans le roman. Les personnages principaux sont impuissants devant la famille Khan et leurs injustices. Ils ne peuvent tout simplement pas s’éloigner de la servitude.

Niveau de langue

Le roman convient le mieux aux élèves en immersion de 6e année et plus. Il y a du passé simple, cependant, il ne devrait pas entraver la compréhension des élèves.

Il y a beaucoup de vocabulaire propre au pendjabi et à l’ourdou, cependant, les définitions ne sont pas difficiles à trouver en ligne. Si vous avez des étudiants pendjabi et/ou pakistanais, ils reconnaîtront une grande partie du vocabulaire.

En conclusion

Le courage d’Amal est un récit magnifique et inspirant qui convient aux élèves d’immersion française de 6e année et plus.

Il y a tellement d’occasions d’apprendre au sujet d’une culture et d’une société si différentes de ce à quoi la plupart des élèves sont habitués.

Enfin, il faut rappeler que le but de ce livre n’est pas de pitier la vie des gens qui viennent de ces sociétés. Je vous encourage à ne pas focaliser uniquement sur les aspects négatifs de la société hiérarchique que nous observons dans le roman. Cette perspective est effectivement celle du colonisateur.

Le but est de comprendre que la vie, les perspectives, les experiences et la réalité différent quand on est né dans un autre coin du monde.

Si vos élèves vous demandent ce qu’ils peuvent faire pour soutenir le droits des femmes à l’autre bout du monde, encouragez-les à augmenter la voix de ces femmes et de continuer a s’éduquer.

This blog post contains a growing list of French Black Lives Matter resources for Core French & French Immersion. The purpose of this blog post is to ensure that we have a variety of resources that put Black francophone voices, experiences and perspectives at the front and center. I frequently hear from teachers that French resources on racial injustices do not exist. That is false!

I have seen a flood of books, resources, Instagram accounts for English teachers and students on Instagram. As French teachers, we must remember that anti-black racism and police brutality are also widespread in Canada and in France. Despite the fact that the French boast about never being a part of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Black French populations continue to be marginalized and oppressed by French institutions.

Please do your due diligence by thoroughly watching and reading the resources before showing them to your own students.

This is not a complete and final list of resources. As I stumble upon and/or am made aware of other documents, I will be adding them to this blog post.

French documentaries & films about racial injustices

1. Banlieusards (Netflix)

This film is an absolute must-watch if you have access to Netflix at your school.

The movie explores the lives of three brothers living in a Parisian banlieue. Despite being siblings, the three could not be more different.

Themes of poverty, race, incarceration, criminal activity, ambition, and marginalization all intersect to produce a moving storyline.

Banlieusards is a must-watch if you are looking to explore systemic racial injustices in France

2. L’ascension (Netflix)

L’ascension is a charming romantic-comedy film.

The storyline explores the life of a young Black man who climbs Mount Everest to prove to a woman that he would do anything for her. You will definitely be laughing alongside the characters throughout the whole movie.

3. Bienvenue à Marly-Gomont (Netflix)

Bienvenue à Marly-Gomont is a poignant film about a Black family that moves to a rural French village from The Congo.

Seyolo Zantoko, the main character, accepts a position as the village’s sole doctor, a position that has remained vacant for some time.

Zantoko and his family are treated as second-class citizens by the villagers, and as a result, they struggle to settle into their new lives.

Warning : this movie is heart wrenching and charismatic. But there’s also a bare butt, so it may not be suitable for children of all ages.

4. Il a déjà tes yeux (Netflix)

The main characters in Il a déjà tes yeux are a French couple of West African and West Indies origin who are struggling to conceive. When the couple finally receives the green light to adopt, they discover, to their immense surprise, that their son is white.

Paul and Sali love their son unconditionally from the beginning. However, they find that their families and French society do not accept them as a family. Over the course of the film, the family encounters many obstacles that prevent their family from being happy.

This is a great film to teach your students about how racism is deeply ingrained in our minds and in our institutions. 

Despite being thematically serious, Il a déjà tes yeux also happens to be highly comical. You will be laugh-crying the whole time!

5. National Film Board of Canada – 19 free films and documentaries

The National Film Board of Canada has a selection of 19 films and documentaries on the lived experiences of Black Canadians. The majority are in English and have French subtitles. Here are four of my favourites :

1. Oscar

In this documentary, musician Oscar Peterson recounts stories about his life, career and his love of music.

2. Une mémoire oubliée… une génération sacrifiée

This is a documentary that recites the lived experiences of Haitian immigrants in the 1960s.

3. Neuvième étage

This documentary recounts a controversial event that occurred in Montreal in the late 1960s where a number of Black students of Caribbean descent accused a professor of racism. Students will hear first-hand the experiences of the former students at the heart of the event.

4. Âme noire

This is a short, but powerful film for all History & Social Studies students. A grandmother recounts to her grandson a series of events in the form of tableaux that their ancestors experienced.

This resource is one I created myself. The resource introduces students to the history of French banlieues and the origins of verlan. Students will learn verlan and other French slang, complete a jigsaw activity, and take part in a number of reading and listening comprehension activities. I also have an entire blog post dedicated to how I structure this unit with my own students.

2. La Ligue des droits de l’Homme : comprendre pour combattre

This is a dense text geared towards French Immersion students, most likely for a Social Studies or Social Justice class. This rich document educates students on the origins of race, racism, and anti-Semitism. This document also contains definitions of vocabulary such as discrimination, culture, human rights, colonialism, etc.

1. Indigo français

I really quickly want to shout the Indigo français team on Instagram. I reached out to them about books written by francophone authors for elementary and high school students.

They got back to me a few days later with a huge list, including names and ISBNs of books they don’t even sell themselves! Thank you to Rachel & Patrick!

The following are news sources that are NOT mainstream media. Mainstream media, especially French mainstream media, has an ugly history of propagating stereotypes of Black people and downplaying (or completely ignoring) issues affecting Black communities.

1. Bondy Blog

The Bondy Blog was formed after the murders of Zyed Benna and Bouna Traoré at the hands of police. The Bondy Blog’s goal is to provide a platform for the voices of minorities whose voices are otherwise suppressed and marginalized. My favourite part about the Bondy Blog is that you do not have to be a renowned journalist to write an article for the Bondy Blog.

2. Street Press

Street Press is another alternative media source. They strive to recount and analyze news stories affecting residents of urban centres and banlieues. Read their about page for more info.
